At Bavarian Motor Repairs, in Capitol Heights, MD, we understand the intricacies of BMW vehicle repair and the vital role that coolant plays in the well-being of your car, and we’re here to enlighten you on how to avoid costly repairs when it comes to your cooling system and your vehicle.

    Understanding Coolant: Your BMW’s Lifeline

Coolant, a primary component in your BMW’s cooling system, is essential for regulating engine temperature and preventing overheating. It’s a blend of antifreeze and water that absorbs heat from the engine and dissipates it through the radiator. Regular checks and maintenance of the coolant level are crucial for the smooth operation of your BMW.

Why is Coolant Essential in BMW Vehicle Repair?

    1. Prevents Overheating: Coolant is the key to preventing your BMW’s engine from overheating. It maintains an optimal temperature range, crucial for the high-performance nature of BMW engines.
    2. Protects Engine Components: Coolant also protects against corrosion and lubricates the moving parts within the cooling system, extending the life of these components.
    3. Ensures Efficiency: A well-maintained coolant system contributes to the overall efficiency and performance of your BMW, keeping it running smoothly.

Signs Your BMW Needs Coolant Attention

Keep an eye out for these indicators that suggest your BMW may need a coolant check or vehicle repair:

    • Temperature Gauge Rising: If the temperature gauge consistently hits high levels, it’s time to check your coolant.
    • Leakage Under the Car: Puddles of coolant under your car are a clear sign of leaks that need immediate attention.
    • Steam from the Engine: Steam or a hot engine hood after a drive could indicate low coolant levels or a failing cooling system.

    Don’t go the extra mile

The auto technicians at Bavarian Motor Repairs said they’ve been seeing BMW vehicles with significant damage to the cooling systems when being driven with low antifreeze, with owner Andrew Minkler estimating those who drive their vehicles while experiencing issues with their cooling systems could end up paying about $1,000 per mile in repairs afterward.

“If you have overheating, turn the car off as safely as possible,” Minkler said. “What is happening is it is causing additional damage to a lot of the plastic components on the engine, and we’re seeing it cost our clients a lot of extra thousands of dollars, and we’re talking within miles of that initial message.”

“Don’t take that risk,” he said.

He recommended drivers pull over as safely as possible, have the vehicle towed, then have the issue properly assessed.

    Avoiding more damage

Minkler said If a problem with the cooling system goes unchecked, it could lead to multiple leaks down the road.

“What happens is, once one of the components is repaired, the next weakest link, the next weakest piece of plastic will go,” Minkler said.

Minkler said one way to determine if there are cooling issues with your vehicle is to remove the coolant reservoir cap. If there is deterioration, the inside of the cap will be brown or tan and likely crumbling.

“Anything we can do to keep your hard-earned money in your pocket and the vehicle on the road, that’s what we’re going to do,” he said.
